Despite the massive efforts that were made for the 35th GENERALI MUNICH MARATHON to take place on 11 October 2020, under changed conditions and in strict compliance with comprehensive hygiene and protective measures, the timeframe that would have remained for its implementation had become extremely tight.

The latest assessment by the Department of Health and Environmental Protection determined that, due to the unpredictability of further breakouts of infection, it would not be possible to make a definitive statement about 11 October 2020 at the present time. Given that over 10,000 people would potentially be in attendance, the planned 30-kilometre run had to be classified as a large-scale event in terms of infection control, and thus required a specific risk assessment. However, performing such an assessment would require knowledge of the number of infections transmitted or prevented from now until then. This is impossible to predict. As such, the present state of things does not provide an adequate basis for reliable planning by those involved.

It is with a heavy heart but the utmost understanding for the concerns and stringent requirements of the authorities that we must announce the cancellation of the GENERALI MUNICH MARATHON. Over recent weeks, the team has been working flat out on our new concept. Contrary to our assumptions a couple of weeks ago and due to the highly changeable situation and uncertain outlook, we will not be able to carry out the run this year. The health and safety of the participants, volunteers, emergency services and partners are our overriding priority.

The plan was to deploy a new concept that would allow us to hold the GENERALI MUNICH MARATHON 2020 on a shortened route and with staggered starts. Social distancing and hygiene measures were stipulated to ensure that protection against infection could be guaranteed at all times. We had been encouraged by the responsible authorities and the Bavarian state government to propose a creative solution, but having spectators along the route represented an increased risk. We don't want to expose them to any danger.

We would like to thank all of the participants for their patience and understanding. We would also like to thank our partners and sponsors for the support they have given us so far, and hope to be able to build upon it in future.

The next 35th GENERALI MUNICH MARATHON is planned to take place in its original form on 10 October 2021.
